MYSTORIES is an installation originally presented in 2023 at the international exhibition "FUSIONISMO" in Prague, Czech Republic.

In structuring this work, Keiko Kamma incorporates motifs drawn from Japanese Shinto shrines. Shinto retains strong elements of an ancient, indigenous spiritual practice native to the Japanese archipelago. Within a shrine, a mirror is frequently placed at the core of the sanctuary as the Goshintai—the sacred object in which the deity resides. Additionally, shimenawa (sacred woven rice-straw ropes) are hung at entrances to demarcate the boundary of the sacred realm.

The monumental braids featured in this installation draw directly from the imagery of the shimenawa, reflecting Kamma’s view that the act of weaving or plaiting has been deeply rooted in sacred ritual since antiquity. Furthermore, several mirrors positioned throughout the space not only reference the Goshintai, but also serve as reflective devices that mirror the individual "my story" of each viewer.

The title "MYSTORIES" is a coined term created by Kamma. While the word "history" evokes "his story," she suggests that individual memories and narratives (my stories) gain liberation precisely by departing from such dominant historical constructs. Merging these irreplaceable "my stories" into a single word also reveals an intriguing phonetic resonance with the word "mystery."
