"Sei-So"(Star Frost, Time and Tide) applies the teqchnique of borrowed scenery to Daigoku-den(the palace of the Emperor in Nara era), with 16,128 LED bulbs set upon the podium of Chodo-in. The video work also projected here presents, through images and texts, a history of Asia in specific relevence to the Heijo-kyo Capital, to crossing between time to the reconstructed reality of Daigoku-den, creating an installation of conceptual art with contextual relevance both in time and space. The video consists of two parts. One part is a narrated history of the turbulence which has led to the contemporary Central Asia of today, once the transit route of the Silk Road.

The second part takes the theme of the passing of 1300 years since the beginning of Nara era in 710. Tracing back another 1300 years we are brought to BC 590, the time of the Babylonian Exile(the fall of the Kingdom of Judah). Further tracing the passing of 1300 years, the video continues a recitation of events of Eastern Eurasia. The placement of lines of LED tubes on the podium, visually inspiring the imagesd of the Milky Way or the line of a Nara-era garden pond, also drew curious attention.

Chodo-in podium

Chodo-in was a hall for mornng assembly, where ministers, both military and literary scholars, and aristocrats came together for political affairs under the supervision of the Emperor, and where banquets and other morning rituals also took place.
